The hair in Veilguard was good wasn't it! i gave my NB dwarf rook a massive poofy ponytail which just looked excellent. I can only think of 3 games I've played that had a character creator, Veilguard, Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden ring. I don't go too crazy with character creators, actually I've always used the randomiser if there is one, as a starting point.
I created a femme, non binary character in both Veilguard and BG, which sort of represented me, not that I tried to make them look like me! The BG character was a very small drow fighter person called Clio, and after I finished the game I like actively missed them? it was really weird, I felt so sad like they were a friend that moved to a different country.
In Elden Ring however, i shared a save with my partner and we passed the controller back and forth, we created a Bob Ross avatar called "Rob Boss"! Rob sadly never completed Elden ring, though he did fight well on our behalf!
Thank you for the shoutout in the beginning Laura, you're the best <3
Never thought that here I'd be, in the year 2025, reading about character creation in games and loving it. Truly, there has never been a better time to be a gamer and to write and read about games.
Thanks, Katya! 💖 Honestly, neither did I! I thought I might come on here, post my silly little posts and that would be it! Making friends and joining an amazing community of like minded gamers is an unexpected and amazing plus!
I am so unimaginative with character creation! My FF14 character is generic. We have a running joke among my friends that I'm playing an NPC. My others are equally as dull, but I somehow spend 40 minutes creating them?
Back in the olden days I'd repeatedly create the same character over and over no matter the game. He was a very tall, very overweight chap with a tucked in shirt (if able), brown slacks, an '80s Dad' mustache and reading glasses. I named him Nerdo.
To mix things up I'd sometimes create the Son of Nerdo™, Nerdo Jr, who looked exactly like his old man only with red hair.
Thanks for the memory! I may have to write about him one day...
I love this so much, I love hearing about/seeing people's characters and the stories behind them! I also never create myself - I have to look at my own face every day and I'd rather pretend to be someone else in a fantastical setting for a while :')
I recently read Blood, Sweat, and Pixels by Jason Schreier, and there's a great chapter on the making of The Witcher III. Highly recommend the book if you haven't read it already!
Ahh thank you, Auzin! 💖 Haha exactly! I don't want to toy with the idea of making a supposed better version of myself when I can make someone new! Thank you so much for the book rec as well! I hadn't heard of it before and my library has it on audiobook, so I'll be listening to it today at work!
I loved it Auzin! Thanks again for the recommendation! 💖 I've since added a few things to my steam wishlist and loved the chapter on The Witcher 3 so much that I listened to it a few times! 😅
Really enjoyed reading this! The conclusion about how these character creators have inspired you as a storyteller and writer honestly gave me goosebumps.
Wow! Thank you so much! 🥰 It's funny, I really fretted about that part, as I'd gone on about the creators for so long that I'd almost forgotten what the point of the post was! 😅
Wow all your characters sound fantastic! What faction did you choose for them? I guess it's hard not to leave a little of yourself in the characters you create! I have totally missed characters once the game is done, especially my Veilguard character! She was just a lot of fun to be around! Also, I had no idea Elden Ring has a character creator!
The hair tech in The Veilguard blew my mind, I hope we see it in other games! Great read, Laura 😁
Thanks Gonçalo! They're just getting better and better! 😁

What a great topic for a post. Thanks Laura!
Thanks so much, Harrison! I bet they're not that bad! 😆 I know a couple of people who just use the default!

Thank you so much for reading, and I hope you do decide to write about Nerdo and Nerdo Jr! They sound awesome! Gotta love the little guys we made! 😁

Omggg that's awesome, I'm so glad to hear that :') it's such a cool story!
Yeah! It was so interesting! I've requested another of the author's books from the library - Press & Reset. Have you read that one?
Ooh no I haven't, let me know what you think~
